Three Ways to Avoid Washing Out

It is hard for many people going back to school to stay focused. Juggling school, family and work can be a challenging task. Some people throw in the towel early, while others might last for a few semesters.

Below are three tips that will help you stay focused and reach your educational goals:

1. Start Slow — some people are in such a hurry to get finished that they take on more than they can handle. A simple trick to avoid this is to start light and increase your load as you see fit.

2. Mix it up — if you are terrible in one area, avoid taking too many classes from that area; mix it up a bit. Take a subject you are comfortable with and one you think you will struggle with at the same time to free up time to focus on the most difficult subject(s).

3. Take classes that interest you – a lot of people find themselves struggling with getting focused because they are not that interested in the subject. Chances are you will not like every class that you are taking, but once you hit courses in your major, it should feel more like doing something you love and less forced — if you picked a major you are passionate about.

Online Certificate Programs

If you are interesting in learning a new skill but don’t want to complete a full bachelors of masters degree, consider a certificate program.

There are three types of certificates I want to talk about:

  • Undergrad – Students can usually complete a certificate program in a specialized area by take 9 or more undergraduate hours in that area.  After completing the required courses, the school will award the student a certificate.
  • Professional or Specialized certificate – A lot of schools offer these types certificates (credit or non-credit) programs. These type programs are usually offered through a school’s extension or continuing education department, and are a great way to learn a skill in a specific niche related to a person’s hobby or job.
  • Grad – This type certificate allows students to complete graduate level work in a particular discipline (12-18 credit hours on average). Because they are graduate level credits, they can be rolled over into a masters program if desired (check with your school for specifics).

So, if you find yourself wanting to learn a new skill whether personal or professional, consider completing an online certificate program.

Design Your Own Degree

Some people have several things they are interested in learning, but there is no traditional degree program that includes them all. If this sounds like you, there are options.

General studies degrees are one of the most common online degree programs online. While general studies may be one name for it, there are several similar programs with different names: interdisciplinary studies, liberal studies or arts, multidisciplinary studies, and sometimes professional or university studies. While requirements at each school will be different, these type programs can be valuable for students looking to compete in the future job market.
